Celebrating Women’s History Month – CLAUDETTE COLVIN<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Too tired to give up her seat on the bus home from high school, on March 2, 1955, Claudette Colvin refused to move for a white passenger\u2014nine months before Rosa Parks<\/a> would do the same. Later she said that she felt inspired by the memories of earlier pioneers to stand\u2014or sit\u2014her ground. As she told Newsweek<\/a>, \u201cI felt like Sojourner Truth<\/a> was pushing down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman<\/a> was pushing down on the other\u2014saying, \u2018Sit down girl!\u2019 I was glued to my seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 15-year-old Colvin was arrested for violating Montgomery, Alabama\u2019s segregation laws, and her family feared for their safety as news of the incident spread. Colvin pleaded not guilty, and was given probation.<\/p>\n
