Announcements:
Father’s Day is today, Sunday, June 22, 2025. Come and worship with us as we celebrate and honor all fathers and men in the church that have influenced our lives, provided guidance, and wisdom.
History of Juneteenth On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed legislation establishing the federal holiday Juneteenth National Independence Day. “Juneteenth” refers to the June 19, 1865, announcement that slavery had been abolished in Texas, one of the last Confederate holdouts, and commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves throughout the Confederate South.
On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery in the Confederate states. Two and a half years later, and two months after the end of the Civil War, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to find that news of the proclamation had not yet reached the town and that people of African descent were still enslaved in Texas.
Union General Gordon Granger then formally announced emancipation from the balcony of the former Confederate Army headquarters. Amid many uncertainties, the annual commemoration of Juneteenth galvanized formerly enslaved African Americans in Texas and across the United States. Juneteenth celebrations include parades, storytelling, educational programs and family gatherings.
Juneteenth a National Independence Day will be celebrated this year on June 19, 2025
