Reflections:
In March 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring Women’s History Week to align with International Women’s Day (March 8th) which has been recognized across the world since March 1911. The following year, on August 4, 1981, the U.S. Congress established Women’s History Week as a federally recognized commemoration of the accomplishments, perspectives, and experiences of women in the United States. This week became a month-long celebration in 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9 and then passed subsequent resolutions requesting that the U.S. President make an annual declaration. Since 1995, each U.S. President has declared March to be Women’s History Month. ***
In celebration of Women’s History Month during March 2021, we will offer inspirational stories of love and hope from a variety of women; quotes from inspiring women; and communication of God’s steadfast love. We hope these messages will inspire and uplift you throughout this month and year!
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” —Maya Angelou
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” –-Helen Keller ****
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. … It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.“– Ruth Bader Ginsburg
“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.“ —Michelle Obama
“Women are leaders everywhere you look—from the CEO who runs a Fortune 500 company to the housewife who raises her children and heads her household. Our country was built by strong women, and we will continue to break down walls and defy stereotypes.” —Nancy Pelosi *****
Facing Trials with Grace
Proverbs 31:25-26 says: “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” Women are known to take care of their families and loved ones. They speak wisdom to all who will listen. Women do this with dignity and grace. They are not afraid to step out on faith. Women have had some phenomenal female leaders to follow. Although there are many, we will focus on just a few each week.
“Do one thing every day that scares you,” wrote Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 – 1962). She had a lot to choose from, as her life was full of challenges. At a young age, Eleanor lost both of her parents and brother, and later was saddled with a slew of personal difficulties. As the longest serving First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, she was also one of the most public, often delivering Franklin’s speeches, holding press conferences and appearing at campaign events, especially after he was paralyzed in 1921. An outspoken force in the White House, Eleanor used all fingers of the media—radio, magazines, newspapers—to disseminate her opinions on certain issues, especially concerning civil rights and the role of women in the workplace. Her obituary in The New York Times called her “the object of almost universal respect.” Eleanor inspires us to bravely tackle issues that matter to us, and to navigate through life’s trials and hardships with gracefulness and tenacity (Borchard, 2019).
