Reflections:
In celebration of Black History Month during February 2021, we will offer quotes of inspiration, hope and love from a variety of people throughout our history and the next generation. We hope the messages will uplift you throughout the year. Know that we make history 365 days a year and inspiration can be found in serving the Lord.
For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it. —from “The Hill We Climb” by Amanda Gorman, 2021 Inaugural Poet
Challenges make you discover things about yourself that you never really knew. – Cicely Tyson
May your choices reflect your hopes and not your fears. – Nelson Mandela
Q: How is Social Justice and Black Lives Matter affecting your life today? R: My name is Austin and social justice and the Black Lives Matter movement has affected me greatly. Before 2016 I was completely oblivious to how this world treated black people. But now I see that I have to be mindful of the way I act and present myself accordingly to avoid conflict with evil spirited people. As negative as social media may be sometimes, it’s helped by keeping me informed and up to date on current issues going on in my community. What people don’t understand about the Black Lives Matter movement is that it’s not meant to sound as if we are superior or better than everyone else. Of course all lives matter but we just want to let people know that our lives matter as well. In the end God doesn’t care about the color of our skin but he cares about the fruit of our spirit. Hopefully one day everyone can come together in unity and see past race and just love one another. —Austin P.
The Black Church: This is our Story, This is our Song is a two-part series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The film tells the story of the roots of Black religion, from the trans-Atlantic slave trade to the ways enslaved Africans preserved and adopted faith practices from slavery to emancipation. Watch the series on your local WTTW station or the entire two-part series of The Black Church here https://www.pbs.org/
