Reflection: God’s Extravagant Promises****
My friend Diane explained how she had been at a stoplight when she saw a million birds fly over her car. I raised my eyebrows. “A million?” I asked, and she insisted that yes, she’d seen a million birds.
“Do you know how many a million really is?” I replied. I was skeptical and amused. The idea that my friend had seen one million birds during the two minutes she idled at a stoplight tickled me, and I could not stop laughing. One million? Really?
Imagine the incredulity of Abram (later known as Abraham) when God declared that he would have more offspring than there were stars in the sky. This disbelief was not because God is not amazing and generous or because God is not powerful, but because Abraham had exactly zero offspring at the time- and he was an old man. Yet, the Scriptures say that Abraham simply believed.
How have you experienced the extravagant promises of God? Read Genesis 15:1-8.
Stay prayerful and read the following daily:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
James 1:2-3 – Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Philemon 1:7 –Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.
John 8:36 – So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
